Why Most New Years Resolutions Fail?!

By Anne Peterson

As 2019 was coming to an end, I noticed a big pull to celebrate the “end” of one year and the “beginning” of the next. Like, somehow, a New Year inherently has magical powers to progress all of my life goals and solve all of the world’s problems. And that 2020 is also a new decade and has even more potential!

I noticed I’ve been viewing “endings” as ‘what wasn’t what I expected’ or ‘what fell short in some way’ and “beginnings” as the hopes and desires and even declarations of what will be “better”. If you are human, your brain is organized to think in linear and black and white terms, in terms of good or bad, in terms of worst to better. Have you noticed the sequential way we think? Better always follows bad. So of course next year will be better than the last.

This is why our New Year’s resolutions rarely work.

The statistics on how many people actually follow through and accomplish their New Year’s resolutions are rather grim. Studies have shown that less than 25% of people actually stay committed to their resolutions after just 30 days, and only 8% accomplish them. Dec 31, 2018 Forbes Magazine

So why do our resolutions tend not to stick? Because they are almost always created on the wrong foundation. They are created on the foundation of the past–the way things were! To create real possibilities for the future, resolutions must be created on a new clean foundation. To do that we need to strengthen our abilities to be complete with what has been, even the good stuff. When we don’t complete the good stuff, it sets us up for expectations and comparisons that often don’t measure up. When we don’t complete the bad stuff, our resolutions are “fixes” on a foundation already proven to be one of failure.

So how do we be complete? This is WAY too big of a question to answer in an email! But, several years ago, I designed a process for a course called “Creating an Invented Life” and it is aimed at this very question. I use this process for myself every year to complete, create and update the things that really matter to me.

For the Goddess Movement followers I am offering a 2 part Webinar to share this process with you!
